In <strong>1714<\/strong>, the Indians of this region were grouped together in a &#8220;refuge&#8221; known as <strong>San Antonio de Remolinos de El Pe\u00f1ol<\/strong>. Jos\u00e9 Nevardo Garc\u00eda, director of the El Pe\u00f1ol Historical Museum, revealed that remains from the 5th and 6th centuries BC have been discovered in the vicinity. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Vestiges of their existence are a few clay <strong>funerary<\/strong> urns found in the locality known as <strong>Alto Verde<\/strong>, and in several as yet unstudied archaeological sites in the hamlets of La Pe\u00f1a, La Piedra, El Roble and El Rosario.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">According to history, the Piedra del Pe\u00f1ol was an <strong>object of worship<\/strong> for the natives who inhabited the area in pre-Hispanic times, and during the colonial period, famous legends were born, such as that of the <strong>devil<\/strong> who tried to take it away on several occasions, to which the large crack at the foot of its western side is attributed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The municipality of <a href=\"https:\/\/visitmycolombia.com\/en\/guatape-colorful-streets-between-lakes-and-the-monolith\/\">Guatap\u00e9<\/a> has undergone a number of changes over the course of its history. After having been essentially a<strong>cattle-raising, farming and mining<\/strong> area, in the 70s of the 20th century it became a <strong>tourist<\/strong> mecca thanks to the construction of a gigantic reservoir on its territory. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/visitmycolombia.com\/en\/visit-medellin-the-city-of-all-possibilities\/\">Medell\u00edn<\/a> &#8216;s state-owned companies built a <strong>large hydroelectric complex<\/strong> there at the time, flooding 2,262 hectares of land. This megaproject had a major social, economic, political, environmental and cultural impact on the locality. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The epic story of the staircase&#8217;s construction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>1954<\/strong>, what was to become known as the Pe\u00f1ol de Guatap\u00e9 was considered a <strong>nuisance by the inhabitants of<\/strong> the time, who devoted themselves solely to agriculture and were far from believing that it would be the future.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Its history dates back to 1954, when Father Alfonso Montoya, <strong>parish priest of Guatap\u00e9<\/strong>, knowing that mountaineers from different parts of the world would come to take up the challenge of climbing it, uttered at mass the expression \u201ctoads don&#8217;t climb stones\u201d<em>(los sapos no suben a las piedras<\/em>). <strong>Don Luis Eduardo Villegas<\/strong> took up the challenge and, together with Ram\u00f3n D\u00edaz and Pedro Nel Ram\u00edrez, beat them all to the top of this marvellous rock. After <strong>5 days of adventure<\/strong>, they managed to hoist a shirt to the summit on July 16, 1954. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Several wooden ladders followed before the 1970s and <strong>the construction of<\/strong> today&#8217;s concrete <strong>staircases<\/strong>, with a double track, one for ascending and the other for descending. Rumors even point to a future where it will be equipped with a modern cable car, enabling more people to climb, including the disabled. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Only one <strong>uncertainty<\/strong> remains: the number of steps! Is it 600, 650, 700 or 740? It&#8217;s hard to say &#8211; we haven&#8217;t counted, and different sources suggest different numbers.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An embarrassing inscription<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>1988<\/strong>, a kiosk was erected at the top of Piedra del Pe\u00f1ol. That year, as part of an agreement with the municipality of <a href=\"https:\/\/visitmycolombia.com\/en\/guatape-colorful-streets-between-lakes-and-the-monolith\/\">Guatap\u00e9<\/a>, it was agreed to <strong>paint<\/strong> the name of Guatap\u00e9 in <strong>white letters 30 metres high<\/strong>. However, the \u201cU\u201d had not yet been painted, and <strong>work was halted<\/strong> at the behest of the governor of the time, Antonio Rold\u00e1n Betancur.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The contract for the sign was worth six million pesos, but under Law 23 of 1973, which <strong>prohibits the painting of natural formations<\/strong>, the governor managed to suspend the project.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">This episode also provoked<strong>indignation in the community of El Pe\u00f1ol.<\/strong> They took offence at the fact that the sign was pointing in the direction of their municipality.
