With its few quiet streets and white houses lined with silence, it offers a discreet, almost secretive charm. Barichara, in fact, is the ideal starting point for getting there &#8211; whether aboard a <em>chiva<\/em>, a brightly-colored wooden bus, or by taking the mythical <em>Camino Real<\/em>, a hike as beautiful as it is historic. Most visitors make only a short stopover in Guane, just for a day, before hitting the road again. And the truth is, that&#8217;s often enough. The village is tiny, quickly explored and relatively isolated from the transport network. Yet Guane is well worth the detour. Its atmosphere is one of rare tranquillity, and the flow of tourists is almost non-existent &#8211; when we visited, we were the only ones strolling around the small, beautifully-kept central square. There, with a coffee or a cool drink in hand, we savor the calm and breathe. The view of the Andes from the mirador completes this gentle and simple interlude. Today, this village steeped in history, nestled in the Andean heights, blends <strong>pre-Columbian memory<\/strong>, <strong>colonial heritage<\/strong> and <strong>rural authenticity<\/strong>, along its trails, traditions and flavours. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">The indigenous Guane civilization<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Before the Spanish conquest, <strong>the Guanes were a people of the Chibcha family<\/strong>, settled on the <strong>J\u00e9ridas plateau<\/strong>, today located in the department of <strong>Santander<\/strong>, mainly in the present-day territories of <strong>Los Santos, Jord\u00e1n, Cabrera, Barichara and Curit\u00ed<\/strong>. Their society was structured into <strong>caciquats<\/strong>, headed by a supreme chief called <strong>Guanent\u00e1 (or Guane)<\/strong>, with local caciques reporting to him. <strong>They lived in scattered hamlets<\/strong>, with no private property: each tribe managed <strong>its territory collectively<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Guane language<\/strong>, now extinct, belonged to the Chibcha family. Long associated with the Muisca language, it may in fact have <strong>come from migratory groups from the Orinoco <\/strong>(plains east of Colombia and extending into Venezuela)<strong> or the Venezuelan coast<\/strong>. This language <strong>rapidly died out after the arrival of the Spanish<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The Guane economy was <strong>agricultural and self-sufficient<\/strong>. <strong>Corn<\/strong> was the main staple, transformed into <strong>mazamorra, bread, cakes, arepas<\/strong> and <strong>ritual chicha<\/strong>. They also cultivated <strong>cassava, potatoes, plantains, beans, cocoa<\/strong> and other crops. <strong>Cotton<\/strong> was used for clothing and <strong>matrimonial dowries<\/strong>. Women wove <strong>traditional fique skirts, capes and bags<\/strong>, while pottery provided <strong>jars, utensils<\/strong> and ritual objects. Unfamiliar with metallurgy, they used <strong>tools made of hardwood or carved flint<\/strong>.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Spiritually, their worldview was <strong>animistic<\/strong> (a way of perceiving the world in which everything that exists &#8211; living beings, objects, natural elements, phenomena &#8211; is endowed with a soul, a spirit or some form of consciousness). They <strong>worshipped idols<\/strong> in shrines, later destroyed by the Spanish. <strong>Cranial deformation<\/strong> was common, perhaps linked to beauty or warrior status. <strong>Marriage was exogamous<\/strong>, with <strong>dowry in cloth or jewels<\/strong>, and chiefs could have <strong>several wives<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Funeral rites<\/strong> were complex: <strong>mummification, burials with offerings, secondary burials<\/strong> (bones placed in decorated urns), accompanied by <strong>feasting and chicha<\/strong>. A <strong>plant (fique)<\/strong> was planted on the grave, marking the sacred link to the <strong>earth and the ancestors<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Politically, <strong>the Guanes were not members of the Muisca confederation<\/strong>, although they shared the Chibcha culture. Their neighbors were the <strong>Yarigu\u00edes<\/strong>, with whom they had frequent conflicts. The <strong>Su\u00e1rez River<\/strong> marked the border with other territories. He followed the <strong>Su\u00e1rez<\/strong> valley and appropriated the land for the Spanish Crown. A <strong>strong resistance<\/strong>, notably led by <strong>the cacique Chanch\u00f3n<\/strong>, was broken by geographical constraints.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The Spaniards then set up <strong>native camps<\/strong>, villages under Church control. The <g id=\"gid_1\">village of M\u00f3ncora (present-day Guane)<\/g> became a <g id=\"gid_2\">religious center<\/g>. As early as <g id=\"gid_3\">1605<\/g>, a <g id=\"gid_4\">brotherhood of the Virgin of Guadalupe<\/g> evangelized the natives. In <strong>1622<\/strong>, the <strong>parish of Moncora-Natividad<\/strong> was created, with the <strong>baptism and confirmation of hundreds of natives<\/strong>, including the caciques. This process <strong>weakened the caciquats<\/strong> and <strong>integrated the Guanes into the colonial system<\/strong>.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The demographic effects were <strong>catastrophic<\/strong>: <strong>European epidemics, wars<\/strong>, <strong>forced labor<\/strong> in <strong>mines<\/strong> (such as the <strong>R\u00edo del Oro<\/strong>) and <strong>haciendas<\/strong>. <g id=\"gid_6\">African slaves<\/g> gradually replaced the indigenous workforce. Between <strong>1540 and 1795<\/strong>, the native population fell, and a <strong>growing interbreeding<\/strong> formed a <strong>multi-ethnic<\/strong> society: <strong>Spaniards, mestizos, free blacks and the remaining Guanes<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Several <strong>new colonial villages<\/strong> appear. The most important was <strong>Barichara<\/strong>, officially founded in <strong>1742<\/strong>. <strong>M\u00f3ncora was renamed Guane<\/strong>, and became a <strong>jurisdiction in 1774<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Evangelization<\/strong> intensified, notably by the <strong>Jesuits<\/strong> and <strong>Dominicans<\/strong>. Although <g id=\"gid_3\">native culture declined<\/g>, certain traditions <g id=\"gid_4\">remained in Christian rituals<\/g>. The<strong>colonial church of Guane<\/strong> (1786) preserves a <strong>chapel dedicated to Saint Lucia<\/strong>, whose <strong>statue (1751)<\/strong> is honored every <strong>December 13<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Politically, Guane became part of the <strong>New Kingdom of Granada<\/strong>. After the <strong>decline of mining<\/strong>, the economy is based on <strong>agricultural haciendas<\/strong>. <strong>Land was distributed among settlers<\/strong>. The indigenous past <strong>lives on in this peaceful Andean village<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Camino Real between Barichara and Guane<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Camino Real<\/strong> is a <strong>historic paved path<\/strong> linking <strong>Barichara to Guane<\/strong>. Originally laid out by the <strong>indigenous Guane people<\/strong>, it was <strong>restored in 1864<\/strong> by the German engineer <strong>George von Lengerke<\/strong>. <strong>Between 5.5 and 6 km<\/strong> long, it can be <strong>walked<\/strong> in around <strong>2 hours<\/strong>. <strong>Classified as a National Monument in 1977<\/strong>, this trail offers a <strong>gentle hike<\/strong> with <strong>spectacular views<\/strong> of the <strong>Su\u00e1rez River canyon<\/strong>. Along the way, you can observe <strong>local potters<\/strong>, <strong>vineyards<\/strong> and <strong>herds of goats<\/strong>.    At the halfway point there&#8217;s a <strong>popular private lookout<\/strong>, the <strong>&#8220;Mirador de la Piedra&#8221;,<\/strong> where you can take a break and drink a fresh juice. <strong>Good footwear<\/strong>, <strong>light clothing<\/strong>, a <strong>hat<\/strong>, <strong>sunscreen<\/strong> and plenty of<strong>water<\/strong> are recommended.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nature and views<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Guane<\/strong> is surrounded by an <strong>arid landscape<\/strong> of <strong>tropical dry forest<\/strong> and <strong>rock formations<\/strong>. The <strong>views<\/strong> from the <strong>Camino Real<\/strong> and the surrounding area are <strong>breathtaking<\/strong>: the <strong>Saravita quebrada<\/strong>, a tributary of the <strong>R\u00edo Su\u00e1rez<\/strong>, flows below, and the <strong>Yarigu\u00edes mountains<\/strong> rise up in the distance. <strong>Tropical birds<\/strong> such as <strong>garrapateros<\/strong> and <strong>caracaras<\/strong> can often be seen, as can <strong>butterflies<\/strong> flitting between cacti and shrubs.   The soil is teeming with <strong>marine fossils<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>snails<\/strong>, <strong>petrified turtles<\/strong> &#8211; relics of a time when this region was <strong>covered by the sea<\/strong>. The <strong>&#8220;Mirador de la Piedra<\/strong> &#8221; is undoubtedly <strong>one of the best viewpoints<\/strong>, with a <strong>broad perspective<\/strong> over the <strong>valley as far as Barichara<\/strong>. Other <strong>secondary trails<\/strong> take you on to <strong>La Fuente<\/strong> or <strong>Villanueva<\/strong>, through <strong>gallery forests<\/strong> and <strong>agricultural areas<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Crafts and traditions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Guane<\/strong> heritage lives on in <strong>local craftsmanship<\/strong>. <g id=\"gid_2\">Cotton weaving<\/g> is <g id=\"gid_3\">emblematic of the region<\/g>, with products such as <g id=\"gid_4\">traditional bags (mochilas)<\/g>, <g id=\"gid_5\">hammocks<\/g> and <g id=\"gid_6\">tapestries with ancestral motifs<\/g>. <strong>Clay pottery<\/strong><strong>(jars<\/strong>, <strong>cups<\/strong>, <strong>jugs inspired by the indigenous style<\/strong>) is also produced, as are objects <strong>carved from wood<\/strong> or <strong>stone<\/strong><strong>(frames<\/strong>, <strong>statuettes<\/strong>).   <strong>Handicraft workshops<\/strong> use <strong>natural fibers<\/strong><strong>(cotton<\/strong>, <strong>fique<\/strong>) and <strong>vegetable dyes<\/strong> to obtain <strong>bright colors<\/strong> such as <strong>red<\/strong>, <strong>green<\/strong> or <strong>blue<\/strong>. <strong>Jipijapa hats<\/strong> and <strong>iraca palm basketry<\/strong> are also common.  You can <strong>buy these products<\/strong> in the <strong>small boutiques<\/strong> around <strong>Guane&#8217;s central square<\/strong>, where <strong>local families<\/strong> sell <strong>handmade<\/strong> <strong>bags<\/strong>, <strong>accessories<\/strong> and <strong>ceramics<\/strong>. Each piece is imbued with <strong>ancient knowledge<\/strong>: in the past, <strong>Guane women<\/strong> wove <strong>fabrics to wrap the deceased<\/strong>, a <strong>textile art<\/strong> linked to their <strong>funerary beliefs<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Typical gastronomy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Guane cuisine<\/strong>, like that of the whole of <strong>Santander<\/strong>, is based on <strong>peeled corn<\/strong> and <strong>goat<\/strong>. <strong>Flagship dishes<\/strong> include<strong>arepa santandereana<\/strong><strong>(peeled corn pancake<\/strong>) and <strong>mazamorra limpia<\/strong>, a <strong>thick soup<\/strong> made with <strong>corn<\/strong>, <strong>pork chops<\/strong>, <strong>potatoes<\/strong> and <strong>beans<\/strong>.  <strong>Roasted cabrito<\/strong> is another <strong>classic<\/strong>: <strong>young goat meat marinated<\/strong> in<strong>garlic<\/strong>, <strong>cumin<\/strong> and <strong>annatto<\/strong>, then <strong>slow-roasted<\/strong>. vicinity of the village of Guane, you can follow ancient paths steeped in history, the famous <strong>&#8220;caminos reales<\/strong>&#8220;, remnants of the traditional roads that once linked the linking cities, colonies and the most remote regions of the empire. In the Santander region, these trails were first traced by the indigenous Guanes before being used by settlers, and then rehabilitated around 1860 by foreign merchants such as the German Geo von Lengerke. He turned them into genuine trade routes, facilitating the transport of products such as tobacco, cotton, cinchona, hats and gold.
