one of Colombia&#8217;s most iconic suspension bridges and a true feat of engineering from the XIX\u1d49 century. Built between 1887 and 1895, it stretches <strong>291 meters<\/strong> and majestically spans the <strong>Cauca River<\/strong>, offering spectacular views of the surrounding green hills and valleys. At the time, it was one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, and today remains a historical and architectural symbol of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Easily accessible from the heritage village of <strong>Santa Fe de Antioquia<\/strong>, just <strong>15 minutes<\/strong> away <strong>by car<\/strong>, the bridge is a must for travelers. Visitor numbers are highest at weekends, during the dry season (December to March and July to August), school vacations (Christmas, Semana Santa, December-January) and during local events, when the village and bridge fill up with tourists. On weekdays and outside the festive season, the visit is much quieter, offering the opportunity to take full advantage of the panoramic views over the Rio Cauca and the unique atmosphere of this suspension bridge. You can visit the bridge all year round, but it&#8217;s best to opt for the dry season, from December to March and July to August, which is ideal for strolling along the bridge, enjoying views of the Cauca River and exploring the surrounding area without the rain. Built at the end of the XIX\u1d49 century, this suspension bridge was not only a technical feat for its time: it represented a major turning point in the economic and territorial integration of the antioque\u00f1o west, while today becoming a leading heritage and tourist symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">History, design and construction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Construction of the Puente de Occidente began in <strong>1887<\/strong> and was completed in <strong>1895<\/strong>, under the direction of Colombian engineer <strong>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Villa<\/strong>. style=\"background-color:#da906b;color:#da906b\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We chose to spend <strong>three nights in Santa Fe de Antioquia<\/strong>, with a very specific goal in mind: to contemplate this famous bridge, which looks like something out of a Western movie. The day before, we had met a <strong>tuktuk driver<\/strong> and agreed to visit the <strong>Puente de Occidente<\/strong> the following morning, to take advantage of the milder temperatures. We were on site at 10:00 am, in bright sunshine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Our driver was supposed to pick us up at the hotel, but when he didn&#8217;t show up, we decided to meet him ourselves. The motorcycle cabs are located at the southeast corner of the <strong>main square<\/strong>, and that&#8217;s where we finally found him. <strong>Vamos!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The short journey takes us through the <strong>historic center of Santa Fe de Antioquia<\/strong>, before reaching the northern part of the village, <strong>Llano de Bol\u00edvar<\/strong>. Formerly known as <strong>Llano Alto<\/strong>, this arid terrain was almost uninhabited and owes its name to Mr. Isa\u00edas Mendosa, who reminded us that these lands left by Bol\u00edvar were intended for the poor. Nearby, the <strong>Cruz del Llano<\/strong> commemorates a fatal duel between two Spaniards in 1562, adding a touch of history to the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We soon leave the cobbled streets for a winding road leading down to the <strong>Rio Cauca<\/strong>. In the middle of the weekend, many bikers, mostly from Medell\u00edn, cross our path. Then, around a bend, a pebbled clearing comes into view: at last, the <strong>Puente de Occidente<\/strong> appears! From this little <strong>vantage point<\/strong>, the view of the bridge and the surrounding vegetation is perfect, offering an overall perspective of the 291 metres linking the two banks. Our driver tells us about the history and construction of the bridge, while we take a few minutes to fly our drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>minute&#8217;s tuktuk ride<\/strong> brings us to the start of the bridge. The driver gives us <strong>30 minutes<\/strong> to stroll, take photos and cross the bridge on foot. Light vehicles only travel in one direction, while pedestrian lanes allow you to enjoy the surrounding landscape in complete safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not just a bridge. It exudes an <strong>aura of another time<\/strong>, with its <strong>steel and wood<\/strong> structures, and the views of the mountains and the Rio Cauca are magnificent, even with the water level relatively low. Despite the weekend, it wasn&#8217;t crowded, and we were able to fully appreciate this impressive structure, which has been standing solidly since <strong>1895<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">On the other side, a few facilities allow visitors to buy <strong>souvenirs, drinks and snacks<\/strong>. Our driver was waiting patiently for us to <strong>return to Santa Fe de Antioquia<\/strong>, this time by tuktuk over the bridge, taking the same route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Declared a <strong>Colombian Site of Cultural Interest in 1978<\/strong>, the Puente de Occidente is an unmissable, inexpensive outing, perfect for an hour&#8217;s stroll. We loved discovering <strong>Colombia through its civil infrastructures<\/strong>, witnesses to a fascinating past, still perfectly preserved. And the best part? The driver&#8217;s impassioned comments, enthusiastically sharing the history of the bridge and the region, provided you understand Spanish. The easiest way to get there is by <strong>tuktuk (moto-carro).<\/strong> This is a very popular tourist outing in the village, and everything is well organized. From <strong>Calle 9 Santander<\/strong>, near the corner with <strong>Carrera 9<\/strong>, just before the main park, just speak to a driver and he&#8217;ll take you to the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Your <strong>accommodation can also call a tuktuk<\/strong> to pick you up directly from the hotel. It&#8217;s easy to do, and there&#8217;s no need to book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The trip only takes about <strong>15 minutes<\/strong>, and the driver often acts as a <strong>guide<\/strong>, sharing lots of information about this iconic bridge (it&#8217;s advisable to understand a little Spanish). Once there, you&#8217;ll have <strong>around 30 minutes<\/strong> to explore and enjoy the site, before the driver takes you back to Santa Fe de Antioquia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">This is a standard tour: all drivers generally offer the same service.
