The walk takes around 45 minutes at a leisurely pace, with an ascent followed by a descent, before crossing the village to reach the famous beach. Let&#8217;s be honest: we didn&#8217;t really enjoy this beach. Unfortunately, the sand is overrun with plastics and microplastics, much more so than on the Colombian side. It&#8217;s all the more frustrating because the place has all the makings of a paradise, but is clearly damaged by human activity. Another important point: if you&#8217;re looking for peace and quiet, it&#8217;s best to avoid weekends, public holidays and vacation periods. At such times, La Miel becomes a veritable vacation camp, attracting many visitors from Sapzurro, Capurgan\u00e1 and Panama. On the positive side, the water is crystal-clear overall, with some algae but in reasonable proportions. The many bars and restaurants accept Colombian pesos, so there&#8217;s no need to change currency. The surroundings remain superb, with views of small jungle-covered mountains. On weekdays, outside the vacations, the atmosphere remains calm: a few families, curious travelers and locals quietly enjoy the seaside. On the other hand, weekends, public holidays and school periods (both Colombian and Panamanian) are much busier. The beach becomes a lively place, welcoming visitors from Sapzurro, Capurgan\u00e1 and beyond, seduced by the proximity of Colombia and the idyllic setting of La Miel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Climate in <strong><strong><strong><strong>La Miel<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: <\/strong>La Miel&#8217;s climate is very similar to that of Sapzurro. The climate is humid intertropical, with warm, relatively constant temperatures all year round, generally between 25\u00b0C and 32\u00b0C. The driest period is from December to April, when the sun is out and rain less frequent, although a few showers are still possible. This is the ideal season to enjoy the beaches, hike in the jungle and explore the surrounding area in good conditions. From May to November, the rainy season sets in, with more regular, sometimes heavy rainfall, often at the end of the day or in the evening. Heat and humidity, on the other hand, hardly vary. This generous tropical climate keeps the vegetation dense and green all year round, offering lush landscapes and remarkable biodiversity. The name comes up again and again, almost as a must in the region. With this in mind, we decided to go there on a <strong>Saturday morning<\/strong> &#8211; a choice which, in hindsight, was perhaps not the wisest.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We first pass quietly through the village of Sapzurro, then take a street that rises gently towards the small mountain &#8211; or big hill, it&#8217;s up to you &#8211; marking the border between Colombia and Panama. As the last houses disappear behind us, the <strong>stairs appear<\/strong>, winding up the hillside like a winding mountain road. In the tropical heat and humidity, it&#8217;s easy to see that the climb is going to be tough. It&#8217;s impossible to say how many steps you&#8217;ll have to climb to reach the top, but there&#8217;s no doubt that <strong>you&#8217;ll have to climb several hundred<\/strong>. Fortunately, the dense vegetation provides welcome shade. We were secretly hoping to come across a few animals&#8230; in vain.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">At the summit, a natural clearing surrounded by trees opens up before us. Two flags fly side by side: <strong>Colombia and Panama<\/strong>. Here we are at the border. The remains of an old checkpoint are there, but no one to watch over them. Travelers pass by, indifferent in either direction.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">After the effort, the descent. On the Panamanian side, the decor is similar: a succession of zigzagging steps, lined with tropical plants and colorful flowers. The trail is pleasant, almost soothing. Below, a straight road leads to the first houses of <strong>La Miel<\/strong>, a village even smaller than Sapzurro.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Barely in, we&#8217;re stopped at an intersection: a <strong>tourist tax<\/strong> is required. <strong>4,000 COP per person<\/strong>, in cash only &#8211; Colombian pesos are accepted. Then simply turn right, walk along an unchecked military post and carry on. Apparently, for an excursion of just a few hours, you don&#8217;t need a stamped passport. So if you thought you&#8217;d get <strong>an extra 90 days in Colombia<\/strong> by returning to the country, <strong>it&#8217;s not possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The palm trees become more numerous, the sea finally appears&#8230; then Playa Blanca. A relatively narrow strip of sand, lined with bars and restaurants. And as it&#8217;s Saturday, it&#8217;s <strong>very busy<\/strong>. Boats arrive continuously from Colombia and Panama, dumping entire groups. If you want to enjoy the peace and quiet, it&#8217;s best to come <strong>early, around 7am<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The climb made us thirsty. We sit down at a table facing the sea to cool off. And that&#8217;s when I notice them: <strong>thousands of tiny plastic fragments<\/strong>, scattered all over the sand. To be honest, no one seems to mind, not even those who go swimming. But for me, it&#8217;s a real shock. And yet the setting is magnificent: clear sand, clear turquoise water, jungle-covered mountains forming the Panamanian coastline. And yet, this beach, dirty and noisy, where every bar imposes its music as if in a sound competition, totally breaks the magic.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Was it a bad time? A bad day? Hard to say. In any case, <strong>La Miel didn&#8217;t convince us<\/strong>. In our opinion, the beaches on the Colombian side, such as <strong>Playa Soledad<\/strong>, are far more beautiful and much cleaner.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We decide not to linger and head back the way we came to Sapzurro. To end the day on a softer note, we&#8217;ll go for a swim at the <strong>small ICA beach<\/strong>.
