more discreet &#8211; but no less spectacular &#8211; side of <strong>Ca\u00f1o Cristales<\/strong>. Here, far from the most famous areas, you&#8217;ll explore a sector where the famous <strong>aquatic plant<\/strong> colors the landscape in <strong>intense green<\/strong>, giving the <strong>natural pools<\/strong> unique emerald reflections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">This <strong>8-kilometer<\/strong> <strong>hike<\/strong> takes you for around <strong>7 hours<\/strong> through a succession of striking landscapes: <strong>waterfalls<\/strong>, <strong>canyons<\/strong>, <strong>giant<\/strong> rock <strong>pools<\/strong> and <strong>natural<\/strong> swimming <strong>pools<\/strong>. Each stage reveals a new setting, such as the <strong>Carol Cristal swimming pool<\/strong>, the spectacular formations of the <strong>Coliseo<\/strong> or the famous <strong>Pozo del Coraz\u00f3n<\/strong>, nestled deep in the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">But what really makes this <strong>trail<\/strong> special is that it&#8217;s still <strong>little used<\/strong>. And there&#8217;s no denying it, it&#8217;s absolutely magnificent. But the river offers many other surprises! The Pailones trail takes you through dense, shady forest with an almost Amazonian ambience, while discovering a green, tumultuous Ca\u00f1o Cristales nestled in a canyon sculpted by centuries. The icing on the cake is that the trail is still relatively uncrowded, making for an authentic and intimate experience. It&#8217;s an ideal hike for those with time on their hands who want to explore a wilder, lesser-known side of the park. And to top it all off, the route ends at Los Ochos, one of the National Park&#8217;s most emblematic sites, offering the best of both worlds: the tranquility of an off-the-beaten-track adventure and the splendor of unmissable landscapes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\" wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns eplus-wrapper is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex eplus-styles-uid-cf12ee\"><div class=\"wp-block-column eplus-wrapper is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow eplus-styles-uid-5e7490\">\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tourist numbers on the Pailones trail: <\/strong>the Pailones trail is probably the least well-known and least-visited route for exploring Ca\u00f1o Cristales. As with all park trails, access is strictly regulated to protect the fragile ecosystem of the river and the aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera. Each day, the number of visitors is limited, and entry is by appointment only with an authorized local guide. Groups are divided between the different trails to avoid overcrowding and allow everyone to enjoy an immersive experience, even on the most popular routes. The Pailones trail offers a hike where you&#8217;re essentially alone with your group, away from the crowds. It&#8217;s important to note that Ca\u00f1o Cristales is only accessible between June and November, the only period when water levels and weather conditions allow the river to reveal its famous brilliant colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Regional climate (Meta): <\/strong>the region&#8217;s climate is tropical, with pleasant temperatures all year round, generally between 22 and 32\u00b0C. There are two main seasons: the rainy season, from April to November, and the dry season, from December to March. It&#8217;s during the wet season that rivers like Ca\u00f1o Cristales display their most spectacular colors, thanks to the growth of the aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera. Even during the rainy season, showers are often intense but brief and localized, regularly giving way to clear skies perfect for outdoor activities. This day on the Pailones trail corresponds to Day 3.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Serran\u00eda de la Macarena<\/strong> is a vast natural expanse, and when one thinks of <strong>Ca\u00f1o Cristales<\/strong>, it&#8217;s often photos of red- and pink-hued rivers in open areas with low vegetation that come to mind. And let&#8217;s face it, it&#8217;s beautiful. But this day would show us a different side of the river and the park. We were going to explore a lesser-known, less-frequented area, which perfectly complemented the trails we&#8217;d already covered on the first two days. This is one of the great advantages of staying longer, beyond the classic three-day tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">As usual, the morning begins with breakfast, followed by a rendezvous at the main park to take a <strong>boat<\/strong>, then an <strong>all-terrain vehicle<\/strong>, and finally reach the park&#8217;s main entrance. But rest assured, this time we weren&#8217;t going to repeat the same day as the day before! After the obligatory checks by the rangers, we take the path leading directly to <strong>Posada de David<\/strong>, the hut where our previous day had almost come to an end. The sun is out, and there&#8217;s no rain to spoil this new adventure. After a short stop to quench our thirst, we&#8217;re back on the road, this time heading for areas well away from the main attractions, such as <strong>Los Ochos<\/strong>, <strong>Los Pianos<\/strong> and <strong>Cascada de la Virgen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We cross meadows and skirt a forest where birds of prey hover above us, on the lookout for their prey. Javier explains that we&#8217;re going to find <strong>Ca\u00f1o Cristales<\/strong>, but not in its famous red hues. Here, the waters take on shades of <strong>green and yellow<\/strong>, and the trail winds through <strong>dense forest<\/strong>, skirting the river through a small canyon where the current is much more tumultuous. A few minutes&#8217; walk is all it takes to reach the edge of this forest with its almost Amazonian charm: the trees are tall, letting in little light, and we&#8217;re alone with our group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">As we progress, Javier shows us different species of plants and trees, introduces us to insects and termite mounds, and we even observe giant ants and cicadas with their characteristic sounds. We make our way along, stepping over trunks and stones to avoid mud and puddles, all the while paying close attention to what we&#8217;re touching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Soon, a <strong>thud<\/strong> tells us that the river is near. And indeed, a few hundred metres further on, <strong>Ca\u00f1o Cristales<\/strong> appears again, but transformed: its lively, choppy waters form a small canyon surrounded by rocky walls on either side. The walk becomes an adventure in itself: we progress along a narrow, rocky path, sometimes only two to six metres wide, skirting the river on the left and the forest or rocks on the right. The ground is wet and slippery in places, making care essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Along the way, we come across <strong>Macarenia clavigera<\/strong> again, this time giving off yellow and green hues, in perfect harmony with the dark green of the forest. In some places, you can descend into the canyon to get closer to the water. A <strong>natural pool<\/strong> marks the turnaround point. As we didn&#8217;t want to swim, we started our return journey to Posada de David. On the way, a monkey appears, the only animal seen all day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Back at the hut, Javier announces a nice surprise: thanks to the time we&#8217;ve saved, we&#8217;ll be able to return to <strong>Los Ochos<\/strong>, but this time on the other side of the river, for our lunch break. Crossing the river is a tricky business: the water is sometimes knee-deep, the current fast and the algae slippery. Fortunately, our <strong>water shoes<\/strong>, purchased the day before, turned out to be perfect. Hand in hand, step by step, we reach the other side without incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">This side of Los Ochos, we&#8217;re on our own. The location offers excellent photo opportunities and a peaceful atmosphere away from the crowds. We take advantage of the sunshine to enjoy our <strong>fiambre<\/strong>, the typical lunch of the day, before setting off on our return journey.
