And what a surprise! It&#8217;s surprising to learn that the first city founded by the Spanish in South America was located here, especially when you realize that today there&#8217;s almost nothing left of it. The museum offers a true journey through time: visitors can learn a great deal about the pre-Columbian indigenous tribes, the arrival of the Spanish, and the introduction of African slaves\u2014not only in this region but along the entire Caribbean coast. The building itself is relatively new, modest in size, but rich in information. Part of the tour takes place outdoors, along several stops in the forest, which makes for a very enjoyable experience. The guide shares a lot of historical details, but you need to understand Spanish, since there is no English-language service. This is where the traces of ancient indigenous civilizations intersect with the early days of Spanish colonization in South America. The site of <strong>Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n<\/strong> takes us right to the heart of this unique historical encounter.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">The Indigenous Peoples of the Dari\u00e9n and the Kunas<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Dari\u00e9n was a vibrant and well-organized region, inhabited by indigenous communities such as the <strong>Tule, the Cueva, and the Kuna<\/strong>. These societies thrived thanks to agriculture\u2014cassava, corn, sweet potatoes\u2014as well as fishing and intertribal trade. Archaeological excavations have uncovered <strong>finely decorated pottery<\/strong>, objects made of gold and shell, and complex domestic structures, all of which attest to a sophisticated culture that was deeply adapted to the rainforest and its resources.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The Kunas, in particular, have left a lasting mark on the region, even though today they are <strong>mainly settled on the Panamanian side<\/strong>, where they continue to preserve their traditions and social organization. Long before the arrival of Europeans, these populations had established long-distance trade networks and developed ritual and artisanal practices that would leave a lasting mark on local history.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">The Founding and Development of Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Everything changed at the beginning of the 16th century. In <strong>1510<\/strong>, Vasco N\u00fa\u00f1ez de Balboa, with the support of Mart\u00edn Fern\u00e1ndez de Enciso, founded <strong>Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n<\/strong>, the first Spanish city on the South American mainland. It quickly became the capital of Castilla del Oro and a strategic center for the colonial administration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">A few years later, in <strong>1514<\/strong>, Pedro Arias D\u00e1vila, known as Pedrarias, arrived with a large expedition and laid out the city according to a formal urban plan: a central square, a church, workshops, and homes. The population at that <strong>time<\/strong> numbered <strong>between 1,500 and 3,000<\/strong>, consisting of a mix of Spanish settlers, local indigenous peoples, and African slaves brought over by the Spanish.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua in Dari\u00e9n also became a departure point for expeditions to Panama, Peru, and Quito, involving figures such as Francisco Pizarro, Diego de Almagro, and Sebasti\u00e1n de Belalc\u00e1zar. The city thus embodies the brutal yet formative encounter between <strong>indigenous societies and European conquistadors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">Decline and Legacy<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its importance, the city is in rapid decline. Between <strong>1520 and 1524<\/strong>, it was abandoned\u2014a victim of conflicts, diseases introduced by Europeans, and the relocation of the colonial capital to what would become Panama City\u2014and was eventually burned down by the indigenous people. eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-9a0b83\" style=\"background-color:#da906b;color:#da906b\">\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">It isn&#8217;t really early when we leave <strong>San Francisco<\/strong>. And yet, the air still has that morning freshness that makes you feel like setting off on an adventure. Walking beside me is <strong>Estefania<\/strong>, our wonderful host at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/co\/cocomar-hostal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cocomar Hostal<\/a><\/strong>, who is walking with us to the meeting point with our driver.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">In the <strong>Choc\u00f3<\/strong> region, roads are few and far between. The road leading to our destination\u2014the Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n <strong>Archaeological Park<\/strong>, located <strong>south of San Francisco<\/strong> \u2014ends about <strong>1 to 1.5 km from the village<\/strong>. So we walk along the coast. The path winds past <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>few scattered houses<\/strong>, <strong>small, quiet beaches<\/strong>, and the ocean, which appears and disappears among the trees.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">After <strong>walking for about twenty minutes<\/strong>, an unexpected sight appeared under a tree: <strong>an old SUV, probably from the \u201980s<\/strong>, parked in the shade like a patient old horse. We barely had time to say goodbye to <strong>Estefania<\/strong> before we were already climbing into that strange carriage.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We have a journey of about <strong>1 hour and 45 minutes<\/strong> ahead of us\u2014 <strong>not on a road, but on a trail<\/strong>. The trip quickly turns into a mini-expedition: <strong>crossing rivers<\/strong>, <strong>muddy trails<\/strong>, and, along the way, <strong>passing through a single village: Titumate<\/strong>. All around us, the landscapes of <strong>Choc\u00f3<\/strong> roll by: <strong>small hills<\/strong> and <strong>deforested plains<\/strong>, giving way <strong>to small farm plots or pastures<\/strong>. Here, nature still seems to take center stage.  <strong>Choc\u00f3 is definitely a wild region.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">When what looks like a second village comes into view, we think we&#8217;ve arrived. In reality, it\u2019s little more than<strong>a small hamlet of just a few houses<\/strong> clustered near the archaeological park. <strong>Here we are.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">What immediately stands out is <strong>the contrast between the hamlet and the site itself<\/strong>. The archaeological park and its museum appear to be relatively <strong>new, well-maintained, and thoughtfully designed<\/strong>. In such a remote place, this is <strong>completely unexpected<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We say goodbye to our driver for a few hours and head to <strong>the museum<\/strong>. The staff are outside, enjoying <strong>the sunny day<\/strong>. Clearly, <strong>we&#8217;re the first visitors\u2026 and probably the only ones today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">A woman calls out to us to talk about <strong>lunch<\/strong>. She recommends that we eat here: <strong>if we wait until we get back to San Francisco, we wouldn&#8217;t eat until 4:30\u20135:00 p<\/strong>.m. It&#8217;s also <strong>a way to support the local economy<\/strong>. So we&#8217;ll have: <strong>a fish dish and a vegetarian dish<\/strong>, to enjoy after the tour. The meal\u2014 <strong>soup, main course, and fruit juice<\/strong> \u2014costs <strong>22,000 COP per person<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Although admission to <strong>the park is free<\/strong>, we have to sign <strong>the visitor log<\/strong>. The guestbook confirms what we had suspected: <strong>very few travelers pass through here<\/strong>\u2014 <strong>perhaps fewer than 30 people a month<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to free admission to the site, <strong>a museum guide also accompanies us at no charge<\/strong>. He&#8217;ll provide us <strong>with plenty of historical details<\/strong> about what we&#8217;re about to discover. There&#8217;s just one requirement: you need to <strong>speak Spanish<\/strong>, because <strong>the staff doesn&#8217;t speak English<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The tour begins inside the building. <strong>The museum houses numerous artifacts illustrating the region\u2019s history<\/strong>, from <strong>its original indigenous populations<\/strong> to <strong>the arrival of the Spanish<\/strong>, <strong>the village\u2019s development<\/strong>, and eventually <strong>its disappearance<\/strong>. <strong>Ceramics, bronze objects, and various artifacts<\/strong> accompany the guide\u2019s explanations, which trace <strong>the history of Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n<\/strong>. <strong>Maps and models<\/strong> also help visitors visualize <strong>the site\u2019s evolution following the arrival of the Spanish<\/strong> and <strong>the changing dynamics of relations with the indigenous peoples<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The second part of the tour takes place <strong>outdoors<\/strong>. The park covers <strong>a vast area<\/strong>, partly covered by <strong>tropical forest<\/strong>, where various historical remains are scattered: <strong>old paved roads<\/strong>, <strong>an iron-processing site<\/strong>, and other traces of <strong>the Spanish conquistadors&#8217; presence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">But this place doesn&#8217;t just tell the story of Europe. It also highlights <strong>the cultures of the region\u2019s indigenous tribes<\/strong>, as well as <strong>the African heritage<\/strong> linked to the many <strong>African slaves brought to the \u201cNew World.\u201d<\/strong> <strong>Beliefs, dietary habits, music, dances, and traditional instruments<\/strong> bear witness to this convergence of <strong>three worlds<\/strong> that continue to shape much of <strong>Latin America<\/strong> today: <strong>Indigenous culture<\/strong>, <strong>Spanish culture<\/strong>, and <strong>African culture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Taking a walk in <strong>the forest<\/strong> is a simple pleasure. There&#8217;s <strong>something beautiful here<\/strong>\u2014something hard to explain. Perhaps <strong>the feeling of a forgotten place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">With the exception of a <strong>denser, darker, and more humid<\/strong> area\u2014 <strong>a<\/strong> veritable <strong>paradise for mosquitoes<\/strong>. The infamous <strong>\u201czancudos.\u201d<\/strong> <strong>You\u2019d better bring some mosquito repellent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We also meet <strong>the guardian of the place<\/strong>: <strong>a good-sized crocodile<\/strong>, quietly enjoying life in <strong>a pond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">After about <strong>three hours of sightseeing<\/strong>, we return to our starting point. The tour is coming to an end. In the meantime, we had to take <strong>an impromptu break to apply alcohol to some mosquito bites<\/strong>. After <strong>years of traveling throughout Colombia<\/strong>, we had <strong>never been attacked like that<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Once our wounds were tended to, it was time for the fun part: <strong>lunch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Right at the park entrance, <strong>a family from the hamlet had set up a makeshift table under a tree<\/strong>. The place is simple and peaceful, and <strong>the break is well deserved<\/strong>. We ate in <strong>an almost surreal silence<\/strong>, <strong>with no other travelers around<\/strong>, feeling <strong>a bit guilty\u2014but very happy\u2014to have this place all to ourselves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We <strong>really enjoyed this cultural site<\/strong>. We had <strong>never heard of<\/strong> it <strong>before<\/strong>. It was almost <strong>by chance<\/strong>, while chatting with the staff at our hotel on the day we arrived in <strong>San Francisco<\/strong>, that we learned <strong>about a historic site in Choc\u00f3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">This discovery sparked <strong>both our curiosity\u2026 and a little concern<\/strong>. Since the site is <strong>relatively unknown<\/strong>, we were worried about <strong>spending an entire day traveling to a remote location<\/strong> <strong>only<\/strong> to <strong>find that there wasn&#8217;t much to see there<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It was quite the opposite.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s <strong>a place full of history<\/strong>, where there&#8217;s <strong>so much to learn<\/strong> \u2014as long <strong>as<\/strong> <strong>you&#8217;re curious<\/strong>, <strong>love history<\/strong>, and <strong>speak Spanish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">We set off again, delighted to have discovered the <strong>Santa Mar\u00eda la Antigua del Dari\u00e9n Archaeological Park<\/strong>, located <strong>south of San Francisco<\/strong>. In the past, it was the <strong>first village founded by the Spanish in South America<\/strong>, and even today it <strong>offers a better understanding of the region\u2019s history throughout the centuries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">And we should also say: <strong>thank you to the Colombian government<\/strong> (yes, really!) for creating <strong>this cultural space with such dedication<\/strong>\u2014and for <strong>making it free<\/strong>\u2014while also helping <strong>to support the local economy of the hamlet<\/strong>.
