Presentation of the work

Delirium, published in 2004 by Laura Restrepo, plunges the reader into the life of Agustina, a woman stricken by madness after a personal trauma. The novel alternates between past and present, mixing memories, family accounts and contemporary events, offering a fragmented narrative that reflects Agustina’s mental state. Set against a backdrop of violence and drug trafficking in Colombia, the story explores family secrets, memory and social fractures. Restrepo combines intense psychological writing with an almost journalistic style to captivate the reader while tackling universal themes such as pain, love and the complexity of human relationships. The blend of realism, dramatic tension and emotional depth makes this novel both immersive and poignant, offering both an intimate and social vision of contemporary Colombia.

Welcoming the press and public

To publication, Delirium received a largely positive reception from specialist critics. Literary journalists have praised the psychological depth of the characters and Restrepo’s ability to capture the nuances of madness and family trauma. His style, blending social realism and narrative tension, has been particularly noted for its ability to keep the reader on his toes while exploring heavy, complex themes. The audience was also seduced, touched by the emotional intensity and authenticity of the characters, who reflect social and human realities. Some noted that the fragmented narration could require an effort of attention, but this approach reinforced immersion in Agustina’s mind.
