The author
José Eustasio Rivera, born in 1888 in Neiva, Colombia, is a writer, poet and lawyer, best known for The Vortex. Born into a middle-class family, he studied law and became involved in political and social activities, which nurtured his critical vision of exploitation and inequality. Passionate about literature and nature, he has used his travels in the Amazon to enrich his story, blending personal experience with literary imagination. Despite a relatively short life, marked by illness, Rivera left an outstanding body of work that influenced Colombian and Latin American literature, making him an emblematic figure of social denunciation and poetic realist writing.
