From the mysterious jungles of La Macarena to the great plains of Yopal and the vibrant Villavicencio, Colombia’s Llanos reveal a wild, raw and deeply authentic Colombia. Here, landscapes alternate between endless savannahs, jade-colored rivers, solitary palm trees and horizons ablaze with sunsets. You’ll come across modern vaqueros, unflappable capybaras, thousands of birds and the occasional stealthy jaguar. It’s an immense, almost limitless region, where every move is like a mini road-trip and every encounter brings you closer to the llanera soul.

But this vastness has a downside: there are very few hostels in the whole of Orinoco. Far from ultra-touristy areas, infrastructure remains limited, scattered between nature reserves, quiet villages and small regional capitals. However, the few youth hostels in the main cities are clearly worth a visit. Run by passionate locals or travelers who have fallen in love with the region, they offer a friendly atmosphere, even if they are less frequented than in the Andes or the Caribbean.

What is a youth hostel? It’s an economical accommodation designed to encourage conviviality and encounters between travelers. There are often dormitories, but also private rooms, as well as communal areas – shared kitchen, lounge, terrace or bar – that encourage exchanges, discussions and the sharing of good tips. The hostels offer excellent value for money, a relaxed atmosphere and a spirit open to all profiles. Some stand out for their design, their commitment to the environment or the activities they offer, such as surf lessons, excursions or group dinners.

In this article, we introduce you to a selection of the few but excellent hostels in Colombia’s Llanos region, renowned for their excellent value for money.
