Mirador de Filadelfia: the best view of Santa Fe de Antioquia and the surrounding area

Table of contents

In brief

Nestled in the heart of the Antioquia mountains, just a few kilometers from the beautiful colonial town of Santa Fe de Antioquia, lies a discreet address: the Mirador de Filadelfia. Easy to access despite its confidential nature, this belvedere perched high above the village offers breathtaking panoramic views of the village and surrounding green valleys. From morning mists to intense sunsets, this is the place to be for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike. Whether it’s a short getaway or a contemplative break, it’s hard not to succumb to the magic of these landscapes, suspended between heaven and earth.

Mirador de Filadelfia

  • Department : Antioquia (Andes)
  • Altitude: 600 m
  • Climate: tropical dry forest (warm)
  • Land: private
  • Direct access: Santa Fe de Antioquia

Our verdict: a superb view of the valley ★★★

Lovers of nature and magnificent panoramas, we had a wonderful time at the Mirador de Filadelfia. Green valleys, mountains as far as the eye can see and the play of light created by the clouds make for a simply magical spectacle. This private, but freely accessible, site is peaceful and easy to reach from Santa Fe de Antioquia. We were there in the afternoon, but visiting at sunset, around 6pm, must be an even more unforgettable experience.

Mirador de Filadelfia tourist attraction: although located in the immediate vicinity of Santa Fe de Antioquia and easily accessible, the Mirador de Filadelfia remains a little-visited site. During our visit, we were even the only ones there, even though it was a weekend! So you can get there at almost any time, without fear of crowds. The site has a catering service and a small swimming pool, which can sometimes attract groups of friends or families for special events. This doesn’t detract from the experience, however, as the installations are located some fifty meters from the main viewpoint, leaving plenty of room for contemplation.

Climate at the Mirador de Filadelfia: located near Santa Fe de Antioquia, the Mirador de Filadelfia enjoys a warm climate all year round, characteristic of the low tropical zones of Antioquia. Temperatures generally oscillate between 25 and 32°C, with little seasonal variation. The mirador can be visited all year round, but the most pleasant periods are the dry season, from December to March, and July to August, when the rains are scarcer. Conversely, the rainy season, from April to June and September to November, is accompanied by occasional heavy showers, which can reduce visibility of the surrounding mountains.

About Mirador de Filadelfia

In the end, there’s very little practical information to know, as the site is neither a museum nor a finca, but simply a viewpoint designed to delight the eye. That said, here are a few useful things to know before you go.

The Mirador de Filadelfia, sometimes called the mirador of Santa Fe de Antioquia, is without doubt the closest viewpoint to the village – and probably the most impressive. Nestled on a small hill about 5 km from Santa Fe de Antioquia, this discreet venue is set in private grounds. However, access is free: the gate remains open during the day, allowing everyone, whether on foot or in a vehicle, to come and admire the panorama.

From the viewpoint, you can enjoy a spectacular 180° view of the Antioquia Andes. Santa Fe de Antioquia is clearly visible in the distance, but you can’t expect to see any details. The village remains visually distant, unlike other viewpoints closer to their historic centers, such as in Jardín, Jericó or Villa de Leyva. Here, the real spectacle is the mountains, their undulating relief and the play of light that changes with the passing hours.

A few dozen meters from the viewpoint, the owner has set up a small, simple and unpretentious food court, offering local sodas and snacks. A small swimming pool completes the ensemble, although we were unable to confirm whether swimming is permitted. Whatever the case, the essential is elsewhere: in this suspended moment facing the Andes, when silence and the immensity of the landscape take over.

Our experience

On a warm, sunny Friday – as is often the case in Santa Fe de Antioquia – while enjoying a typical lunch, a simple idea crossed our minds: take a look at the surrounding area on Google Maps. And what an excellent idea it was. When we discovered a watchtower nearby, the urge to go there was immediate. No sooner had we finished our meal than we went out into the street to hail a tuktuk, or moto-carro as they’re known here, the village’s iconic cabs. Soon, one of them stops. We tell him about the watchtower, obviously well known to the locals.

After agreeing on a fare of 40,000 COP for the round trip, including 30 minutes on site, we climb aboard. The relatively short route takes us out of the historic center and along the main road to the other part of the village. Then we leave Santa Fe de Antioquia and take a lovely, slightly uphill road, putting the tuktuk’s engine to the test. After about 4 km, we come to a small intersection, from which a dirt road climbs steeply to the top of the hill.

This is the path we take, not without wondering how the tuktuk will manage such a steep incline. But as the saying goes: slowly but surely. A few small houses dot the hillside and, as we round a few bends, we finally catch sight of what appears to be our final destination in the distance.

And then it happened. We pass through a gate and reach the top of the hill, which is surprisingly vast and flat. In all, it took about fifteen minutes to reach the historic center. At its western end is the watchtower. Our driver, who gave us plenty to say about the area on the way up (even if the tuktuk’s screaming engine on the way up lost us a few), stops and invites us to enjoy the view. It then continues a little further on, towards a basic catering point.

We have 30 minutes to enjoy the panorama. From the vantage point, Santa Fe de Antioquia can be seen in the distance – although it’s still hard to understand how such a dissonant white building could have been built there. But the real stars of the day are elsewhere: the mountains. Sometimes near, sometimes farther away, they offer a landscape in perpetual evolution, while the clouds project magnificent plays of light onto the slopes of the Andes.

You could probably say that this is just another watchtower in Colombia. And that would probably be true. But we never tire of these panoramas. The Andes are beautiful, surprising and sometimes even intimidating. As good visitors – and of course to be able to offer you this article – we take a lot of photos.

And already, the 30 minutes are up. We rejoin our driver, who is chatting quietly with the owner, drink in hand. In the course of the conversation, we learn that the latter is looking to sell the land. We sincerely hope that the future owner will continue to allow free access to the watchtower. Then it’s time to set off again.

The return journey to Santa Fe de Antioquia takes 15 minutes, all downhill – a much more pleasant playground for the tuktuk’s engine. With stars in our eyes, we return to the shadow of the village, happy with this little impromptu getaway.

Tip: we were told that the sunsets from the mirador at around 6.00 pm are well worth the detour… for those who like them.

How to get to the Mirador de Filadelfia?

The Mirador de Filadelfia is just 5 km from Santa Fe de Antioquia, and the most convenient way to get there is by tuktuk (moto-carro). From Calle 9 Santander, near the corner with Carrera 9, just before the main park, just ask a driver to take you to the viewpoint.

It’s also possible to arrange for a tuktuk to come directly to your accommodation, without having to book in advance: it’s all very easy.

The journey usually takes no more than 15 minutes. Drivers often act as guides, sharing anecdotes and information about the village and the region (remember to speak a little Spanish to get the most out of it). Once you’ve arrived, you’ll have about 30 minutes to admire the panorama and take photos, before the tuktuk takes you back to Santa Fe de Antioquia.
