Before arriving in Jericó, we’d never tried paragliding. But as soon as we set eyes on the surrounding landscape, with its majestic mountains and deep valleys, under a brilliant blue sky, the idea became irresistible. We knew that this exceptional setting deserved to be discovered in a different way, and what better way than to fly over it? So we decided to take the plunge with Ecoland, a decision we haven’t regretted. From the pre-flight briefing to the moment we touched down, everything went perfectly. This first paragliding experience was unforgettable, offering us a breathtaking new perspective on Colombia, this time from the skies. Here, we share the story of this adventure, which enabled us to see this magnificent country from a completely new angle.

Paragliding in Jericó

Our paragliding experience with Ecoland

We still remember the mixture of excitement and nervousness we felt on our first paragliding flight. The wind was gentle, the sun shining brightly, and we had that strange feeling that we were finally about to realize one of mankind’s great dreams: to fly. Our hearts were beating wildly, especially mine, as I’m afraid of heights (but as the saying goes, if your feet don’t touch the ground, you can’t feel that awful sensation).

After watching a short video explaining the sequence of operations and safety rules, the instructor helped us get kitted out, carefully adjusting our harnesses and checking every strap. We then did a trial run to prepare for takeoff: running with enough force to drive the glider with the wind, getting used to the equipment, all the while keeping the instructor right behind us.

When he asked us if we were ready, we simply nodded, unable to speak as the adrenalin washed over us. A moment later, we were running towards the void, our feet leaving solid ground.

The first sensation of floating was indescribable. It was as if the whole world fell silent, and suddenly we were flying. The landscape opened up before us, a sea of peaks in the distance and the Rio Cauca stretching as far as the eye could see. We could see the little houses below, the winding roads, and the dense forests that looked so peaceful from the air.

The glider glided smoothly, responding to every subtle movement of the pilot. We felt incredibly free, almost invincible. The wind caressed our faces, and we felt a deep connection with nature, as if we’d become birds, even if only for a few moments. We could feel the force of the updrafts and downdrafts, capable of varying our altitude significantly, almost imperceptibly. Is this what it’s like to be a condor?

At one point, we dared to look down, and instead of the fear we’d anticipated, a sense of peace came over us. We were no longer mere spectators of the world’s beauty; we were part of it. Every second in the air was a revelation, a moment of pure euphoria.

The weather conditions were ideal, providing a perfect day for flying. In a matter of moments, we climbed to an altitude of almost 3,000 metres, well above the take-off site. From up there, the village of Jericó stretched out below us, revealing the places we had explored the day before, such as the central square, the Mirador and the Santuario de Santa Laura. Coffee plantations and fincas scattered across the landscape added a touch of charm to this breathtaking view. From the air, Colombia reveals all its splendour!

We flew along the mountain range, playing with the currents, and enjoying filming this incredible moment with the GoPro supplied by Ecoland, cleverly attached to our equipment. The pilot took the opportunity to give us geographical indications of the region and explain how to maneuver a paraglider. I don’t know if we were lucky, but this man really exuded passion.

When it was finally time to land, after almost 40 minutes in the air, we headed gently downstream towards Cauca Viejo, the famous little village where many national stars have their homes. Located in the canyon of the Rio Cauca, along the river, a pasture with cows was our landing zone. Phew, the landing went well, much smoother than we’d imagined, and without ending up in cow dung!

We came back down to earth with smiles that wouldn’t go away. Our hearts were still full of that feeling of absolute freedom. It was an experience we’ll never forget, and as soon as we touched down, one thought came to us: when can we do it again?

Once we’d come to our senses, we stripped off our gear and took it about 200 meters further along the road, where another member of the agency was waiting to drive us back to the starting point. And do you know what? The 20-minute drive scared us more than the flight! Our driver, obviously a rally fan, had a blast on the winding Andean roads.

We finally arrived at our destination, where it all began, and watched in turn as others set off. Already full of envy, we told ourselves we’d have to relive this unforgettable experience.

Service providers

There are 2 companies offering paragliding flights in Jericó. Both have very good reviews and are serious, offering similar services at identical rates. So to make your choice, it’s just a question of availability, or of feeling when you talk to them.

Paragliding is a relatively calm activity. Once you’re up in the air, the pilot will ask you how you feel, why not climb higher or fly a little longer!

Rates

Both companies offer similar fares for virtually identical flights:

  • 230,000 COP / person: Cauca Viejo landing site for 18-minute flight
  • 250,000 COP / person: Puente Iglesias landing site for a 25-minute flight

As far as we were concerned, we had opted for the first option (Cauca Viejo) with Ecoland, and we ended up flying for 40 minutes because the conditions were exceptional, according to the pilot, who really enjoys flying and is clearly an enthusiast.

In the end, it’s not an expensive experience when you consider that it includes photos and videos (you’ll have a GoPro-type action cam that you control), hydration, return transportation by car, insurance policy and accompaniment by a certified pilot.

Of course, people who can fly independently are also welcome, as are those wishing to learn how to handle a paraglider.

How do I get to the paragliding sites from Jericó (Ecoland or Nube Extrema)?

The two paragliding sites of Ecoland and Nube Extrema are located just outside the village of Jéricó.

By cab / tuktuk

The quickest way is to take private transport for a journey of around 6-8 minutes:
– Taxi from the central square for 10,000 COP.
– Tuktuk (motorcycle cab) from carrera 4 for 8,000 COP.

Similarly for the return journey, once you’ve completed your paragliding flight, ask the paragliding agency to call for transport to pick you up and take you back to the village.

On the move

If you walk at a good pace, you can reach the paragliding sites in 40 minutes from Jericó’s main square.

It’s uphill on the way up (and downhill on the way back, logically) and you’ll have to walk along the main road.
